Steamed buns for anyone?

On Saturday we left lovely Prachuap Khiri Khan to head South.

The second class train option was fully booked, so we has no option but to travel third class. This cost was around £1 per person.

The three hour journey down South was hot and quite unbearable at times in the busy carriage.  We stood for about 45 minutes, before managing to get a seat next to an open window blasting in hot air.

Our next stop is Chumphon.  We knew this town was going to be a little quiet. But the purpose of the visit was to sort out a visa extension.

The town is mainly used as a ferry departure point for Koh Tao, Koh Samui and Koh Phangan (full moon party). I did look at options to revisit these islands as it's been a few years. However it is peak season so the prices have risen dramatically.

Unfortunately our stay hasn't been very exciting.  We are staying slightly out side the town (which we knew to be the case) in a modern hotel.  Hotels inside the town are a little grungy, and I'm too old for the backpacker crowd.

The hotel serves a great breakfast including steamed buns. Choose from:

Pork, Chinese BBQ pork, red bean, black bean, sesame or taro.

The only downside to the hotel is the noise caused by inconsiderate guests who love to slam doors. And the air conditioning that revs every ten minutes like a motorbike.  But apart from that it's good.

We discovered on arrival that transportation to and from the Immigration Office was going to be difficult. It's far out of town and would require a driver to take us, wait, and bring us back. We have no idea how long that would take, or the cost.

Originally here for five nights, we've decided to leave tomorrow after three nights. George will no doubt weep about the £20 he has wasted. We've done everything there is to do here, so it is time to move on.

Tomorrow we take a two hour coach trip across to the east of Thailand to Ranong, which is on the border with Myanmar (Burma).

Sri Lanka: the highs and lows of a month long trip

After a month of exploring Sri Lanka, we've packed our bags, ready to head back to the UK. I want to share some of the highs and lows of our adventure. Highlights Cheap : Our British pounds stretched remarkably far and we only  spent a total of  £1440 per person. The breakdown: £750 - Etihad indirect flights (1.5 hour stop off in Abu Dhabi)  £690 - Bed & Breakfast, dinner, all transport (bus, train, taxi), cultural entrance fees, hospital treatment, laundry and grocery shopping.  The People : Incredibly warm and hospitable, very friendly and eager to help. They really enjoyed stopping for a friendly chat on the street, and we felt genuinely welcomed as English tourists. Scenery : The views were breathtaking, particularly the hill country from a train.  Weather : Consistently hot and sunny. To avoid the intense heat, we found it best to travel very early morning.  Lovely Beaches : Beautiful and clean, though the steep drop off and powerful waves made sw...

Time to go home

I sign off my travel blog with a brief post. Today we are heading home. George snored all night so I had no sleep - just ready for a long flight 😬 Cases are packed and both around 12kg each so well under the limit! 👜 It's been an amazing 4 month trip in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia by sea, water, coach and train. 🚂✈️🚌🚢 It's very difficult to say what was my favourite part of the trip but Luang Prabang, Koh Lanta and Langkawi were highlights.  I'm not looking forward to the UK weather and I also need to find a job. But I'm looking forward to seeing friends and family.  Until the next time 👋 Tracy x

Onwards to KL

We left the lovely island of Langkawi this morning. Our next stop is Kuala Lumpur. I highly recommend this beach resort and hopefully I will return again one day 🏖️ #kualalumpur #malaysia #airasia
