50 something on her travels

We are currently staying in Ayutthaya which is the former capital city of Thailand.  The city was attacked by the Burmese army in 1767 who burned the city to the ground. They also chopped off the heads of many of the sacred statues. The city was never rebuilt and remains in the same condition as all those years ago.  Today it is recognised as a UNESCO heritage site.  We are here for four days which is too long as not much to see apart from Wats - and once you've visited a few Wats you've seen them all!   And to make it more fun George has passed his cold to me. Nothing like a cold in the heat 😬

As a little more rural, the ancient city has mostly small guest houses. We found a super quirky one called Tamarind House which will cost us £18 a night including a light breakfast. A bit different to Singapore prices ☺️

On arrival in Ayutthaya we took the short ferry ride at 10 baht each over to the island. Its was so cheap that my currency app cannot convert it to English pence 😁.  Took about one minute to get over the other side. I will add a video to Facebook and Instagram. 

After a week in Bangkok it was time to move on. George was ill for a few days with a cold (unsure if it was covid) so it was a low key visit. Luckily he is feeling much better 😁 On 1 December we took the train from the famous Bangkok Hua Lamphong Station to Ayutthaya which is around 64 kilometres north.  We had a choice of many trains but opted for a 3rd class experience at 15 baht each or 35p each for the 2 hour journey. For this we got a hard plastic seat, ceiling fans and an open window. It was very enjoyable for the price!
