Morning sunrise and 396 steps. Avoiding the monkeys 🐒

Today we awoke to a beautiful sunrise.  It felt tropical and reminded me of early mornings in Bali.

Without bicycle hire (don't ask, it is frustrating), we walked to Wat Thammikaram Worawihan (aka The Monkey Temple).  It is located at the top of Khao Chong Krajok hill that overlooks the bay of Prachuap Khiri Khan.  Climbing to the top takes 396 steps, and is quite challenging in the morning heat.  The steps are also home to many macaque monkeys who roam freely up and down.

The monkeys are largely unfazed by visitors.  If you ignore them and walk by they don't care.  If you feed them this may result in fights and potential scratching.  Believe me, we don't want another visit to a hospital for a course of Rabies vaccines.  Mind you, there were a couple of tourists feeding them bananas 😩.  You must also remember to have your possessions locked in your bag, otherwise they will nab them.

The locals do arm you with bamboo canes to a) help with the climb and b) act as a deterrent so the monkeys take one look at you and move on. Luckily they weren't interested in us.

Here I am, suitably sweaty with my cane at the top of the hill.

When we reached the top, we were rewarded with some great views and thankfully some sea breeze.

And this is looking all the way back down the yellow walled steps to the bottom.

George also got a blessing outside the temple by a monk.  The monk also gave us a lesson in diaphragmatic (belly) breathing.  Not sure why, but we obviously looked a bit hot and bothered from the climb!

We are really enjoying this seaside town as it is not touristy - no Starbucks, big chain hotels etc.

Sri Lanka: the highs and lows of a month long trip

After a month of exploring Sri Lanka, we've packed our bags, ready to head back to the UK. I want to share some of the highs and lows of our adventure. Highlights Cheap : Our British pounds stretched remarkably far and we only  spent a total of  £1440 per person. The breakdown: £750 - Etihad indirect flights (1.5 hour stop off in Abu Dhabi)  £690 - Bed & Breakfast, dinner, all transport (bus, train, taxi), cultural entrance fees, hospital treatment, laundry and grocery shopping.  The People : Incredibly warm and hospitable, very friendly and eager to help. They really enjoyed stopping for a friendly chat on the street, and we felt genuinely welcomed as English tourists. Scenery : The views were breathtaking, particularly the hill country from a train.  Weather : Consistently hot and sunny. To avoid the intense heat, we found it best to travel very early morning.  Lovely Beaches : Beautiful and clean, though the steep drop off and powerful waves made sw...

Time to go home

I sign off my travel blog with a brief post. Today we are heading home. George snored all night so I had no sleep - just ready for a long flight 😬 Cases are packed and both around 12kg each so well under the limit! 👜 It's been an amazing 4 month trip in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia by sea, water, coach and train. 🚂✈️🚌🚢 It's very difficult to say what was my favourite part of the trip but Luang Prabang, Koh Lanta and Langkawi were highlights.  I'm not looking forward to the UK weather and I also need to find a job. But I'm looking forward to seeing friends and family.  Until the next time 👋 Tracy x

Onwards to KL

We left the lovely island of Langkawi this morning. Our next stop is Kuala Lumpur. I highly recommend this beach resort and hopefully I will return again one day 🏖️ #kualalumpur #malaysia #airasia
