An eventful time in Ubon Ratchathani

We moved to our final destination of our 'tour' of eastern Thailand.  We took another brand new bus down the country's smooth main roads.  We had a birds eye view being at the front on the way.

It is was an uneventful three hour journey apart from seeing this very large statue of a quail.

We were here for just two nights.  Our hotel was conveniently located close to the airport for a Friday departure.  However it was that close it felt like the aircraft was landing on top of the hotel.  Luckily there weren't many inbound flights a day, and we also had a very quiet room.

Apart from seeing this very nice Wat, there wasn't much time for sightseeing.  We were continuing the bad night sleep pattern as George couldn't shift the cold that had gone to his chest.  So he spent the day in bed.  He felt that bad on Thursday night, we took a slow walk to the private hospital twenty minutes down the road.  We sat in reception for ten minutes, and after professing he felt better, we walked back.

Going to bed that night I thought all was better.  But from 4am, he was up in pain, he even went for a walk because he couldn't sit or lay down.  When he returned it was inevitable we needed to go back to the hospital.  Conscious we had a 1pm flight, we got a taxi to the hospital at 6am.

Thankfully it was just a chest infection.  In just 40 minutes he had been triaged, had a chest x-ray, ECG, and two sets of blood pressure tests.  Then they wheeled him to the cashier to pay and pick up his prescription waiting for him.  It cost £90 and it was worth every penny.  The service was impressive.  The excess on the travel insurance was £150 so it was cheaper to pay and go.

There was a government hospital around the corner which would have been perfectly adequate as well.  But there was no waiting in the hospital we went into, allowing us to return, have breakfast, pack and leave on time.

We took a slightly delayed flight and then picked up the coach taking us back down the coast to Cha-am (where we stayed in December).  The last month has been very hectic, moving around constantly and feeling unwell.  We are now sitting in the sun for a few days to relax.  I was very happy this morning to resume my beach walk in the early sunshine of the day. And get some fresh air after a few weeks of pollution from city traffic.

Sri Lanka: the highs and lows of a month long trip

After a month of exploring Sri Lanka, we've packed our bags, ready to head back to the UK. I want to share some of the highs and lows of our adventure. Highlights Cheap : Our British pounds stretched remarkably far and we only  spent a total of  £1440 per person. The breakdown: £750 - Etihad indirect flights (1.5 hour stop off in Abu Dhabi)  £690 - Bed & Breakfast, dinner, all transport (bus, train, taxi), cultural entrance fees, hospital treatment, laundry and grocery shopping.  The People : Incredibly warm and hospitable, very friendly and eager to help. They really enjoyed stopping for a friendly chat on the street, and we felt genuinely welcomed as English tourists. Scenery : The views were breathtaking, particularly the hill country from a train.  Weather : Consistently hot and sunny. To avoid the intense heat, we found it best to travel very early morning.  Lovely Beaches : Beautiful and clean, though the steep drop off and powerful waves made sw...

Time to go home

I sign off my travel blog with a brief post. Today we are heading home. George snored all night so I had no sleep - just ready for a long flight 😬 Cases are packed and both around 12kg each so well under the limit! 👜 It's been an amazing 4 month trip in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia by sea, water, coach and train. 🚂✈️🚌🚢 It's very difficult to say what was my favourite part of the trip but Luang Prabang, Koh Lanta and Langkawi were highlights.  I'm not looking forward to the UK weather and I also need to find a job. But I'm looking forward to seeing friends and family.  Until the next time 👋 Tracy x

Onwards to KL

We left the lovely island of Langkawi this morning. Our next stop is Kuala Lumpur. I highly recommend this beach resort and hopefully I will return again one day 🏖️ #kualalumpur #malaysia #airasia
