In Thailand, locals use a QR code linked to their bank to pay for goods and services. However this isn't readily available for foreign visitors. Visa is only available for big purchases like hotel rooms.
For us the choice is:
1. Pay cash. Which means a local transaction fee per withdrawal, plus a foreign currency withdrawal fee charged by your home bank.
2. There is a bank card you can transfer money to, linked to an app which can scan the QR code and take the payment. However these cards are only available at Bangkok and Chiang Mai Airports.
So it's to and from the cash machine for the time being 😃
