Kandy to Ella

Saturday 8th

We took the eight hour 'tourist train' this morning to Ella, which stands 1000m above sea level.  It's a lengthy journey that wends it's way around hills and tea plantations 🌳🚂.

Once a British colony (until 1948), we built the Sri Lankan Railway. Many of the original stations, infrastructure and quirky signage remain to this day.

The Ella bound train is famous for Instagrammers who love hanging out of open doors to take selfies. I don't think GWR will allow the same for our commuters! Selfie lovers need to watch out for approaching trains when posing for shots. I'll post a video of that on my social media.

We're staying high above Ella town in a super B&B called Okeed Ella. Costing £23 a night, it's excellent value for money. It also boasts an amazing view from our balcony - especially at sunrise 🌅.

Monkeys pose a problem for the owners as they try stealing Jackfruit from their trees. The owner's father (looks about 80 but as fit as a fiddle) retaliates by firing rocks at them with his catapult.

Sunday 9th

We embarked on a morning walk down the hill to Ella (which was a stupid idea as its too far), but luckily were saved by a local bus heading down. The 15 minute journey (accompanied by music) jiggled the life out of us at a cost 20p each. But that wasn't the cheapest transport of the day.

We took a return train to a local station that cost 10p in total in 3rd class. As you'll see from the photo the carriage walls look like they've never been cleaned 😦.

Sri Lanka: the highs and lows of a month long trip

After a month of exploring Sri Lanka, we've packed our bags, ready to head back to the UK. I want to share some of the highs and lows of our adventure. Highlights Cheap : Our British pounds stretched remarkably far and we only  spent a total of  £1440 per person. The breakdown: £750 - Etihad indirect flights (1.5 hour stop off in Abu Dhabi)  £690 - Bed & Breakfast, dinner, all transport (bus, train, taxi), cultural entrance fees, hospital treatment, laundry and grocery shopping.  The People : Incredibly warm and hospitable, very friendly and eager to help. They really enjoyed stopping for a friendly chat on the street, and we felt genuinely welcomed as English tourists. Scenery : The views were breathtaking, particularly the hill country from a train.  Weather : Consistently hot and sunny. To avoid the intense heat, we found it best to travel very early morning.  Lovely Beaches : Beautiful and clean, though the steep drop off and powerful waves made sw...

Time to go home

I sign off my travel blog with a brief post. Today we are heading home. George snored all night so I had no sleep - just ready for a long flight 😬 Cases are packed and both around 12kg each so well under the limit! 👜 It's been an amazing 4 month trip in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia by sea, water, coach and train. 🚂✈️🚌🚢 It's very difficult to say what was my favourite part of the trip but Luang Prabang, Koh Lanta and Langkawi were highlights.  I'm not looking forward to the UK weather and I also need to find a job. But I'm looking forward to seeing friends and family.  Until the next time 👋 Tracy x

Onwards to KL

We left the lovely island of Langkawi this morning. Our next stop is Kuala Lumpur. I highly recommend this beach resort and hopefully I will return again one day 🏖️ #kualalumpur #malaysia #airasia
