Heathrow to Colombo

2-4 February 2025

While we always prefer direct flights for long-haul travel, the only direct option was with Sri Lanka Airways, which had poor reviews.  So, we opted for an indirect flight with Etihad Airways, and as always, they didn't disappoint. The service was excellent, and we even got to fly on an A380! Sadly, 'The Residence' on the upper deck was way beyond our budget. 😎

The layover in Abu Dhabi added 1.5 hours to our journey, but it was a welcome opportunity to stretch our legs.  Zayed International Airport impressed us with its futuristic design and efficient service — a far cry from the often average experience at Heathrow.

Arriving in Colombo mid-afternoon, we were immediately hit by the humid, 90-degree heat.  It was a stark contrast to the unseasonably heavy rains that had plagued the area throughout January. Luckily, the weather seems to have turned a corner, and we're hoping for clear skies for the rest of our trip.

We're staying in a charming Airbnb just 20 minutes from the airport.  For just £30 a night, we have a private pool, a well-equipped kitchen, and a tranquil garden—perfect for acclimatising to the heat and catching up on some much-needed sleep.

We'll be here for four nights, which also includes Sri Lanka's Independence Day on 4 February.  Tomorrow I'll start planning our next destination on our one month trip.

The 5.5-hour time difference from the UK is going to take some getting used to.  I'll have to look into the geography of Sri Lanka's time zone—it's a mystery to me!

Sri Lanka: the highs and lows of a month long trip

After a month of exploring Sri Lanka, we've packed our bags, ready to head back to the UK. I want to share some of the highs and lows of our adventure. Highlights Cheap : Our British pounds stretched remarkably far and we only  spent a total of  £1440 per person. The breakdown: £750 - Etihad indirect flights (1.5 hour stop off in Abu Dhabi)  £690 - Bed & Breakfast, dinner, all transport (bus, train, taxi), cultural entrance fees, hospital treatment, laundry and grocery shopping.  The People : Incredibly warm and hospitable, very friendly and eager to help. They really enjoyed stopping for a friendly chat on the street, and we felt genuinely welcomed as English tourists. Scenery : The views were breathtaking, particularly the hill country from a train.  Weather : Consistently hot and sunny. To avoid the intense heat, we found it best to travel very early morning.  Lovely Beaches : Beautiful and clean, though the steep drop off and powerful waves made sw...

Time to go home

I sign off my travel blog with a brief post. Today we are heading home. George snored all night so I had no sleep - just ready for a long flight 😬 Cases are packed and both around 12kg each so well under the limit! 👜 It's been an amazing 4 month trip in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia by sea, water, coach and train. 🚂✈️🚌🚢 It's very difficult to say what was my favourite part of the trip but Luang Prabang, Koh Lanta and Langkawi were highlights.  I'm not looking forward to the UK weather and I also need to find a job. But I'm looking forward to seeing friends and family.  Until the next time 👋 Tracy x

Onwards to KL

We left the lovely island of Langkawi this morning. Our next stop is Kuala Lumpur. I highly recommend this beach resort and hopefully I will return again one day 🏖️ #kualalumpur #malaysia #airasia
