I want to tell you a quick bit of family history on my mother's side.
My Grandad was part of the Royal Artillery and was stationed in both Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) and Burma during WW2.
During his time in Sri Lanka, the Japanese dropped a bomb in Colombo which sank a munitions boat. Allied troops were told to retrieve the ammunition from the submerged ship. When they went to fire the shells, they exploded.
As a result, the blast perforated Grandad's eardrums, so he was partially deaf for the rest of his life. I suspect
it was also a great excuse for selective hearing when my Nan was telling him off 😂.
The Royal Artillery also had a gun site on Sigiriya Rock. However my Grandad and comrades only made it half way up the 180m rock owing to the presence of a hornets nest! 🐝
Looking forward to climbing the rock tomorrow at 5am.
