Crazy Colombo

On Wednesday, we travelled into Colombo for the day. Let's just say it's hectic! The city is crammed full of thousands of vehicles in traffic jams, and it's heavily polluted.

Colombo doesn't really have many notable landmarks apart from Pettah Market, the Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, and the Gangarama Temple. Many people skip visiting the city. But we decided to go even though we knew it wouldn't be the highlight of our trip.

Unlike other Asian cities, there isn't the metro infrastructure to make navigating around easy. You're at the mercy of the tuk-tuk drivers—one wanted to charge us up to five times the price to take us a few minutes down the road to a temple! We did, however find one with a meter that charged us the right price. But then he didn't have any change! 😂

On the plus side, pre-booked taxis are dirt cheap. "Pick Me" (which is not a dating app) is our Uber equivalent. The journey to Colombo took just about 45 minutes and cost a tiny £6.

We've noticed how super friendly the Sri Lankan people are. They always smile and say hello. All signs and menus are in English, so there's no issue with getting lost or not understanding.

After a full on city day it was time to relax around the pool and read.

A early night for us as we need to run the gauntlet of the early morning rush hour into Colombo tomorrow. Next destination is hill country.

Sri Lanka: the highs and lows of a month long trip

After a month of exploring Sri Lanka, we've packed our bags, ready to head back to the UK. I want to share some of the highs and lows of our adventure. Highlights Cheap : Our British pounds stretched remarkably far and we only  spent a total of  £1440 per person. The breakdown: £750 - Etihad indirect flights (1.5 hour stop off in Abu Dhabi)  £690 - Bed & Breakfast, dinner, all transport (bus, train, taxi), cultural entrance fees, hospital treatment, laundry and grocery shopping.  The People : Incredibly warm and hospitable, very friendly and eager to help. They really enjoyed stopping for a friendly chat on the street, and we felt genuinely welcomed as English tourists. Scenery : The views were breathtaking, particularly the hill country from a train.  Weather : Consistently hot and sunny. To avoid the intense heat, we found it best to travel very early morning.  Lovely Beaches : Beautiful and clean, though the steep drop off and powerful waves made sw...

Time to go home

I sign off my travel blog with a brief post. Today we are heading home. George snored all night so I had no sleep - just ready for a long flight 😬 Cases are packed and both around 12kg each so well under the limit! 👜 It's been an amazing 4 month trip in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia by sea, water, coach and train. 🚂✈️🚌🚢 It's very difficult to say what was my favourite part of the trip but Luang Prabang, Koh Lanta and Langkawi were highlights.  I'm not looking forward to the UK weather and I also need to find a job. But I'm looking forward to seeing friends and family.  Until the next time 👋 Tracy x

Onwards to KL

We left the lovely island of Langkawi this morning. Our next stop is Kuala Lumpur. I highly recommend this beach resort and hopefully I will return again one day 🏖️ #kualalumpur #malaysia #airasia
