Climbing Sigiriya Rock

13 February

We arrived at 5am sharp to climb Sigiriya Rock before sunrise. Luckily our accommodation was only a few minutes drive away. George said we could walk, but our B&B host advised against this, due to wild roaming elephants 🐘.

We pre-booked e-tickets to avoid the queue. But they don't accept tickets on phones, so we had to join the queue to get them printed. It's not worth the bother to plan ahead! This also applies when you buy train tickets online 🤔.

Sigiriya charges a special foreign tourist entrance fee (much higher than for locals) at $35 each.  More people are now favouring Pidurangala Rock which is only 1km away. It's free and you get an excellent view of Sigiriya.

Sigiriya Rock is about 200m above the surrounding countryside and it took us around 35 minutes to climb. We were one of the first to the top, but already beaten by the Instagram crowd sat in their favoured seats.

Climbing is not for the faint hearted. It's better to do in the dark because when it's light you see how flipping high it is.  If you're climbing pre-dawn you'll need a head torch as its pitch dark.  As the sun rises it becomes unbearably hot and the steps up and down become clogged with tourists.

Unfortunately the selfie fans were disappointed as dawn ended up being misty with cloud obstructing the sun.

But the cheeky monkeys were on hand to keep us entertained.

The overcast weather was short lived as the cloud burnt off to reveal an amazing view.

Sri Lanka: the highs and lows of a month long trip

After a month of exploring Sri Lanka, we've packed our bags, ready to head back to the UK. I want to share some of the highs and lows of our adventure. Highlights Cheap : Our British pounds stretched remarkably far and we only  spent a total of  £1440 per person. The breakdown: £750 - Etihad indirect flights (1.5 hour stop off in Abu Dhabi)  £690 - Bed & Breakfast, dinner, all transport (bus, train, taxi), cultural entrance fees, hospital treatment, laundry and grocery shopping.  The People : Incredibly warm and hospitable, very friendly and eager to help. They really enjoyed stopping for a friendly chat on the street, and we felt genuinely welcomed as English tourists. Scenery : The views were breathtaking, particularly the hill country from a train.  Weather : Consistently hot and sunny. To avoid the intense heat, we found it best to travel very early morning.  Lovely Beaches : Beautiful and clean, though the steep drop off and powerful waves made sw...

Time to go home

I sign off my travel blog with a brief post. Today we are heading home. George snored all night so I had no sleep - just ready for a long flight 😬 Cases are packed and both around 12kg each so well under the limit! 👜 It's been an amazing 4 month trip in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia by sea, water, coach and train. 🚂✈️🚌🚢 It's very difficult to say what was my favourite part of the trip but Luang Prabang, Koh Lanta and Langkawi were highlights.  I'm not looking forward to the UK weather and I also need to find a job. But I'm looking forward to seeing friends and family.  Until the next time 👋 Tracy x

Onwards to KL

We left the lovely island of Langkawi this morning. Our next stop is Kuala Lumpur. I highly recommend this beach resort and hopefully I will return again one day 🏖️ #kualalumpur #malaysia #airasia
