Back on familiar ground

We departed Weligama today, and frankly, it was a relief. The town fell far short of our expectations. It was quite grubby, with the town rammed full of tourists. Picture Bournemouth on its busiest summer day, but with everyone in the sea learning to surf. The only saving grace was the quality of our B&B and it's quiet location out of town.

Our train journey proved to be an exercise in patience. Today's scheduled departure was cancelled because of a Hindu holiday, resulting in an additional  three-hour delay. 😬

Our later departure was luckily only a small train hop back to Galle, reuniting us with our hosts from a week prior. We're very happy to be back. And in no time  indulged in another rice and ten curries feast within the fort walls, which was delicious. 😋

And observed the locals enjoying the delights of their disco bus which was quite illuminating.

After an unbroken 24-day streak of relentless sunshine, the heavens finally opened. Rain! Yes, actual rain. It was a novelty to use my umbrella for its intended purpose, rather than as a shield against the scorching heat. It seems the weather is beginning to give us a gentle reminder of our imminent return to the UK next week. ☔🇬🇧

Sri Lanka: the highs and lows of a month long trip

After a month of exploring Sri Lanka, we've packed our bags, ready to head back to the UK. I want to share some of the highs and lows of our adventure. Highlights Cheap : Our British pounds stretched remarkably far and we only  spent a total of  £1440 per person. The breakdown: £750 - Etihad indirect flights (1.5 hour stop off in Abu Dhabi)  £690 - Bed & Breakfast, dinner, all transport (bus, train, taxi), cultural entrance fees, hospital treatment, laundry and grocery shopping.  The People : Incredibly warm and hospitable, very friendly and eager to help. They really enjoyed stopping for a friendly chat on the street, and we felt genuinely welcomed as English tourists. Scenery : The views were breathtaking, particularly the hill country from a train.  Weather : Consistently hot and sunny. To avoid the intense heat, we found it best to travel very early morning.  Lovely Beaches : Beautiful and clean, though the steep drop off and powerful waves made sw...

Time to go home

I sign off my travel blog with a brief post. Today we are heading home. George snored all night so I had no sleep - just ready for a long flight 😬 Cases are packed and both around 12kg each so well under the limit! 👜 It's been an amazing 4 month trip in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia by sea, water, coach and train. 🚂✈️🚌🚢 It's very difficult to say what was my favourite part of the trip but Luang Prabang, Koh Lanta and Langkawi were highlights.  I'm not looking forward to the UK weather and I also need to find a job. But I'm looking forward to seeing friends and family.  Until the next time 👋 Tracy x

Onwards to KL

We left the lovely island of Langkawi this morning. Our next stop is Kuala Lumpur. I highly recommend this beach resort and hopefully I will return again one day 🏖️ #kualalumpur #malaysia #airasia
