Ancient capital of Polannaruwa

14 February

We visited the one-time capital of Sri Lanka today in the midday sun (not advisable).  We booked a Tuk-Tuk driver who dropped us off so close to every sight we didn't spend much time walking in the heat. Sigiriya was tiring yesterday so being lazy was the order of the day!

We asked our driver to take us for a traditional Sri Lankan food lunch - he said he knew a great place. So where did we roll up - a restaurant that specialised in feeding the hoards of tourists on tours.

So we resigned ourselves to tuck into the local buffet at the extortionate price of £5 per person. But then again George was pleased as this was a cheap Valentines meal 😂

We did shake out heads at the western couple in front eating toasted sandwiches and chips 😑

One of the highlights of the day was seeing two wild elephants on the side of the road. Unfortunately we weren't permitted to stop. Elephant tours is big business here and gets mixed reviews on how well the animals are looked after. So to see these elephants roaming freely was amazing 🐘.

Sri Lanka: the highs and lows of a month long trip

After a month of exploring Sri Lanka, we've packed our bags, ready to head back to the UK. I want to share some of the highs and lows of our adventure. Highlights Cheap : Our British pounds stretched remarkably far and we only  spent a total of  £1440 per person. The breakdown: £750 - Etihad indirect flights (1.5 hour stop off in Abu Dhabi)  £690 - Bed & Breakfast, dinner, all transport (bus, train, taxi), cultural entrance fees, hospital treatment, laundry and grocery shopping.  The People : Incredibly warm and hospitable, very friendly and eager to help. They really enjoyed stopping for a friendly chat on the street, and we felt genuinely welcomed as English tourists. Scenery : The views were breathtaking, particularly the hill country from a train.  Weather : Consistently hot and sunny. To avoid the intense heat, we found it best to travel very early morning.  Lovely Beaches : Beautiful and clean, though the steep drop off and powerful waves made sw...

Time to go home

I sign off my travel blog with a brief post. Today we are heading home. George snored all night so I had no sleep - just ready for a long flight 😬 Cases are packed and both around 12kg each so well under the limit! 👜 It's been an amazing 4 month trip in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia by sea, water, coach and train. 🚂✈️🚌🚢 It's very difficult to say what was my favourite part of the trip but Luang Prabang, Koh Lanta and Langkawi were highlights.  I'm not looking forward to the UK weather and I also need to find a job. But I'm looking forward to seeing friends and family.  Until the next time 👋 Tracy x

Onwards to KL

We left the lovely island of Langkawi this morning. Our next stop is Kuala Lumpur. I highly recommend this beach resort and hopefully I will return again one day 🏖️ #kualalumpur #malaysia #airasia
