Final 24 hours in Bangkok

19 - 20 November

We've come to the end of an amazing holiday (well I would say that as I booked it 😂) with a final 24 hours in Bangkok.

We stayed again at the super Vera Nidra B&B which is such great value for a major city.

Our final day started with some cleaning duties. I can't bear coming back with a stinking bag. So it was a quick 2 minute walk around the corner to the laundrette to wash and dry all our clothes. It took about an hour at an extortionate cost of £2.50. The laundrette also supply the powder and detergent free of charge!

It was a really hot day so we took sanctuary in the shopping malls so I could indulge in a little Christmas shopping, including a visit to my favourite store.  I was 14kg light in my luggage so I could afford to add more weight!  In fact Eva Air allow 2 x 25kg bags per economy passenger and by the looks of it everyone else used it 😲

The Bangkok malls are dripping with designer stores and lots of vibrant colour.  My favourite is ICON Siam which was only a 10 minute walk from our accommodation.  I still can't get used to see Christmas decorations in 35 degs c + heat!

There were however some odd food choices..

Following another delicious meal at £1.50 each, we treated ourselves to final cocktails at The Pennisula overlooking the Chao Praya River.

A lovely end to a super holiday 😊

Until the next sunset.

Sri Lanka: the highs and lows of a month long trip

After a month of exploring Sri Lanka, we've packed our bags, ready to head back to the UK. I want to share some of the highs and lows of our adventure. Highlights Cheap : Our British pounds stretched remarkably far and we only  spent a total of  £1440 per person. The breakdown: £750 - Etihad indirect flights (1.5 hour stop off in Abu Dhabi)  £690 - Bed & Breakfast, dinner, all transport (bus, train, taxi), cultural entrance fees, hospital treatment, laundry and grocery shopping.  The People : Incredibly warm and hospitable, very friendly and eager to help. They really enjoyed stopping for a friendly chat on the street, and we felt genuinely welcomed as English tourists. Scenery : The views were breathtaking, particularly the hill country from a train.  Weather : Consistently hot and sunny. To avoid the intense heat, we found it best to travel very early morning.  Lovely Beaches : Beautiful and clean, though the steep drop off and powerful waves made sw...

Onwards from Sigiriya to Galle

Our journey from Sigiriya to historic Galle was a tale of two trains – one a nostalgic throwback, the other a test of endurance.  We began our day by heading to Habarana train station. H abarana, like many stations in Sri Lanka, felt like stepping back in time.  The ticketing process was entirely manual, with a gentleman appearing just before departure to issue tickets – cash only, of course!  Another employee manually lowered the crossing barrier.  Our previous train journeys in second class had been comfortable, but this 5.5 hour trip to Colombo was a different story. The seats were grimy, and the heat was stifling. We were thankful to finally pull into Colombo, an hour behind schedule, which meant we missed our connection. Luckily, we only had an hour's wait before boarding a new second-class carriage to Galle.  This train was a marked improvement, and we settled in for the final leg of our journey along the coast.  Galle city is a UNESCO heritage site, ...

Time to go home

I sign off my travel blog with a brief post. Today we are heading home. George snored all night so I had no sleep - just ready for a long flight 😬 Cases are packed and both around 12kg each so well under the limit! 👜 It's been an amazing 4 month trip in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia by sea, water, coach and train. 🚂✈️🚌🚢 It's very difficult to say what was my favourite part of the trip but Luang Prabang, Koh Lanta and Langkawi were highlights.  I'm not looking forward to the UK weather and I also need to find a job. But I'm looking forward to seeing friends and family.  Until the next time 👋 Tracy x
