Vang Vieng has a dark past. It once was a haven for backpackers seeking a dangerous thrill. The adventure was called 'tubing' where you take the inner tube of a car or bike, sit in it and fly down the river. Along the way you stop at unlicensed bars offering drugs and drink. After many tourist deaths the tubing ended and the bars were shut.
Backpackers still flock to seek adventure but its much more serene - climb mountains, go caving, ziplining and to meet other travellers on their journey through Laos.
During our 3 day stay we instead opted for a poolside view of the mountains and the Nam Song River at our hotel 😊
