Disappointment of Vientiane

I was really looking forward to returning to Vientiane after living here ten years ago. Whilst not the most exciting capital city it always had a great atmosphere with lots of great restaurants and bars.

Alas the return was to a sadder place which is suffering badly since Covid.  The city has built itself up ready for the influx of tourists coming from China on the new railway.  Hotels have sprung up everywhere and the riverside has become a major entertainment and hospitality centre.  The once quaint handicraft night market is now sprawling with cheap designer fashion instead.

The railway launched a year ago, slap bang in the middle of restrictions. Since the lifting of restrictions the volume of tourists have not yet returned like we've seen up north.

So many local bars and restaurants have shut down and the Mekong River development remains pretty much untouched and looks derelict.

The city is unkept and smelly with rubbish strewn around (no bins!).  Compared to Luang Prabang the capital is disappointing and I would only recommend a night here on your way up to Luang Prabang.

On a positive note the Salana Boutique Hotel we stayed in is excellent and has one of the best buffet breakfasts we've had so far on our trip.  And we managed to visit a few sights around the city before we depart tomorrow for Phuket.

Sri Lanka: the highs and lows of a month long trip

After a month of exploring Sri Lanka, we've packed our bags, ready to head back to the UK. I want to share some of the highs and lows of our adventure. Highlights Cheap : Our British pounds stretched remarkably far and we only  spent a total of  £1440 per person. The breakdown: £750 - Etihad indirect flights (1.5 hour stop off in Abu Dhabi)  £690 - Bed & Breakfast, dinner, all transport (bus, train, taxi), cultural entrance fees, hospital treatment, laundry and grocery shopping.  The People : Incredibly warm and hospitable, very friendly and eager to help. They really enjoyed stopping for a friendly chat on the street, and we felt genuinely welcomed as English tourists. Scenery : The views were breathtaking, particularly the hill country from a train.  Weather : Consistently hot and sunny. To avoid the intense heat, we found it best to travel very early morning.  Lovely Beaches : Beautiful and clean, though the steep drop off and powerful waves made sw...

Time to go home

I sign off my travel blog with a brief post. Today we are heading home. George snored all night so I had no sleep - just ready for a long flight 😬 Cases are packed and both around 12kg each so well under the limit! 👜 It's been an amazing 4 month trip in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia by sea, water, coach and train. 🚂✈️🚌🚢 It's very difficult to say what was my favourite part of the trip but Luang Prabang, Koh Lanta and Langkawi were highlights.  I'm not looking forward to the UK weather and I also need to find a job. But I'm looking forward to seeing friends and family.  Until the next time 👋 Tracy x

Onwards to KL

We left the lovely island of Langkawi this morning. Our next stop is Kuala Lumpur. I highly recommend this beach resort and hopefully I will return again one day 🏖️ #kualalumpur #malaysia #airasia
