Broken down to Vientiane

Today we took the 'short' journey from Vang Vieng to Vientiane. We opted for a shared bus ride. The journey should have taken two hours maximum along the new Lao China Expressway.

When we left the bus terminal it was clear the bus had a problem - the gearbox sounded rough and there were issues getting it into gear.

But we were on our way! We were flying along the road until the driver pulled over suddenly and he announced we had broken down. So we all piled out onto the hard shoulder for an hour whilst they tried to repair a coolant hose that had split.

A little regular maintenance is needed on this bus!

Some backpackers lost patience as they had onward connections. They took their bags and walked off into the distance to try and hitchhike their way to the city.

What else can you do but be patient. The driver said we would wait twenty minutes for a bus but that is Laos time and it was much longer than that.

Eventually a replacement bus arrived but not before we had to walk our luggage down the hard shoulder for fifteen minutes before boarding.  So our total journey was more like four and a half hours 😂

It's my first return to Vientiane since living here eleven years ago. We are staying slap bang in the centre in Salana Boutique Hotel. We have a couple of days of sightseeing before we bid farewell to Laos and head back to Thailand.

Sri Lanka: the highs and lows of a month long trip

After a month of exploring Sri Lanka, we've packed our bags, ready to head back to the UK. I want to share some of the highs and lows of our adventure. Highlights Cheap : Our British pounds stretched remarkably far and we only  spent a total of  £1440 per person. The breakdown: £750 - Etihad indirect flights (1.5 hour stop off in Abu Dhabi)  £690 - Bed & Breakfast, dinner, all transport (bus, train, taxi), cultural entrance fees, hospital treatment, laundry and grocery shopping.  The People : Incredibly warm and hospitable, very friendly and eager to help. They really enjoyed stopping for a friendly chat on the street, and we felt genuinely welcomed as English tourists. Scenery : The views were breathtaking, particularly the hill country from a train.  Weather : Consistently hot and sunny. To avoid the intense heat, we found it best to travel very early morning.  Lovely Beaches : Beautiful and clean, though the steep drop off and powerful waves made sw...

Time to go home

I sign off my travel blog with a brief post. Today we are heading home. George snored all night so I had no sleep - just ready for a long flight 😬 Cases are packed and both around 12kg each so well under the limit! 👜 It's been an amazing 4 month trip in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia by sea, water, coach and train. 🚂✈️🚌🚢 It's very difficult to say what was my favourite part of the trip but Luang Prabang, Koh Lanta and Langkawi were highlights.  I'm not looking forward to the UK weather and I also need to find a job. But I'm looking forward to seeing friends and family.  Until the next time 👋 Tracy x

Onwards to KL

We left the lovely island of Langkawi this morning. Our next stop is Kuala Lumpur. I highly recommend this beach resort and hopefully I will return again one day 🏖️ #kualalumpur #malaysia #airasia
