Train saga - finale

Today we caught the train to Vang Vieng.  This is the view at the front of the massive station.

When you arrive your ticket and passport are checked before you go through security.

As we thought they identified 'hazardous' objects and indicated they had to confiscate my travel hairspray and dry shampoo. Which was fine as they left the other hairspray, nail varnish/remover and nail scissors in the bag 😁

The station itself has nothing in it apart from toilets, a VIP 1st class lounge and drinking water. Note the drinking water is hot so only good if you are making noodles. There are no shops or restaurants at all.

We had to stay in the waiting room until we were called to file out onto the platform, standing behind the line.  The train rolled in (check Facebook for video) and as is the case everywhere in the world the queue disappeared and everyone bundled on.

The hour train ride was comfortable and quiet. There was some amazing scenery out of the window but most of the time we were in and out of tunnels.

When we got off we were ushered left to leave the station and show our tickets again. George went right to take a photo of the front of the train and was promptly told no and to exit.

Overall it was well worth experiencing the new train but we may take the easier minivan route to get to Vientiane in a few days 🚐

Sri Lanka: the highs and lows of a month long trip

After a month of exploring Sri Lanka, we've packed our bags, ready to head back to the UK. I want to share some of the highs and lows of our adventure. Highlights Cheap : Our British pounds stretched remarkably far and we only  spent a total of  £1440 per person. The breakdown: £750 - Etihad indirect flights (1.5 hour stop off in Abu Dhabi)  £690 - Bed & Breakfast, dinner, all transport (bus, train, taxi), cultural entrance fees, hospital treatment, laundry and grocery shopping.  The People : Incredibly warm and hospitable, very friendly and eager to help. They really enjoyed stopping for a friendly chat on the street, and we felt genuinely welcomed as English tourists. Scenery : The views were breathtaking, particularly the hill country from a train.  Weather : Consistently hot and sunny. To avoid the intense heat, we found it best to travel very early morning.  Lovely Beaches : Beautiful and clean, though the steep drop off and powerful waves made sw...

Time to go home

I sign off my travel blog with a brief post. Today we are heading home. George snored all night so I had no sleep - just ready for a long flight 😬 Cases are packed and both around 12kg each so well under the limit! 👜 It's been an amazing 4 month trip in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia by sea, water, coach and train. 🚂✈️🚌🚢 It's very difficult to say what was my favourite part of the trip but Luang Prabang, Koh Lanta and Langkawi were highlights.  I'm not looking forward to the UK weather and I also need to find a job. But I'm looking forward to seeing friends and family.  Until the next time 👋 Tracy x

Onwards to KL

We left the lovely island of Langkawi this morning. Our next stop is Kuala Lumpur. I highly recommend this beach resort and hopefully I will return again one day 🏖️ #kualalumpur #malaysia #airasia
