9.5 hours to Chiang Mai

We continued our journey up north on 5 December from Ayutthaya to Chiang Mai.  We took the fastest train which is a mere 9.5 hours for the 700km ish journey. The train is only three carriages long with second class AC upright seats. 



The train is very popular and gets booked fast. We were very lucky to get tickets. We met a couple who were not so lucky and had to instead take an overnight 3rd class train sitting bolt upright for 13 hours 😬

We were quite impressed with the service. As part of the price we were served two rounds of hot drinks, a morning snack and a lunch of rice with various hot pouches. Don't ask me what it tasted like as I had a full blown cold! 

As always the toilets on trains are an experience. I can't remember the last time I hovered over a public toilet with one hand gripping the open window to ensure I didn't soil myself as the train jolted from side to side 😂

Sri Lanka: the highs and lows of a month long trip

After a month of exploring Sri Lanka, we've packed our bags, ready to head back to the UK. I want to share some of the highs and lows of our adventure. Highlights Cheap : Our British pounds stretched remarkably far and we only  spent a total of  £1440 per person. The breakdown: £750 - Etihad indirect flights (1.5 hour stop off in Abu Dhabi)  £690 - Bed & Breakfast, dinner, all transport (bus, train, taxi), cultural entrance fees, hospital treatment, laundry and grocery shopping.  The People : Incredibly warm and hospitable, very friendly and eager to help. They really enjoyed stopping for a friendly chat on the street, and we felt genuinely welcomed as English tourists. Scenery : The views were breathtaking, particularly the hill country from a train.  Weather : Consistently hot and sunny. Time to go home

I sign off my travel blog with a brief post. Today we are heading home. George snored all night so I had no sleep - just ready for a long flight 😬 Cases are packed and both around 12kg each so well under the limit! 👜 It's been an amazing 4 month trip in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia by sea, water, coach and train. 🚂✈️🚌🚢 It's very difficult to say what was my favourite part of the trip but Luang Prabang, Koh Lanta and Langkawi were highlights.  I'm not looking forward to the UK weather and I also need to find a job. Onwards to KL

We left the lovely island of Langkawi this morning. Our next stop is Kuala Lumpur. I highly recommend this beach resort and hopefully I will return again one day 🏖️ #kualalumpur #malaysia #airasia
