KL to Penang (22 November)

Our 4 hour train journey took us from KL to Butterworth, before boarding the 10 minute ferry crossing over to George Town on Penang Island.

KL Sentral train station was far more serene than the hustle and bustle of London. We all had to sit patiently in the waiting area until our train was called.

Our train journey itself was very smooth and punctual. With pre-seat reservations required this avoided chaotic scenes to grab a seat.

When we arrived at Butterworth Station we had a short walk to the ferry terminal to make the final part of the journey to Penang.

You can get over to the island by road bridge or ferry. We opted for the ferry at 22p each.  Let's just say we won't be getting on that boat again. There were no clear safety measures being followed. Thank goodness the journey took only a few minutes. George did take one photo out of the ferry window which also described the weather on arrival - grim.

We are staying in Georgetown for 3 nights in a lovely traditional style building called Carnarvon House. It is nestled down a quiet road away from the city noise and traffic pollution - perfect. As we move further north and away from major cities we are finding the style of accommodation we are seeking to be much cheaper but still excellent quality.

Sri Lanka: the highs and lows of a month long trip

After a month of exploring Sri Lanka, we've packed our bags, ready to head back to the UK. I want to share some of the highs and lows of our adventure. Highlights Cheap : Our British pounds stretched remarkably far and we only  spent a total of  £1440 per person. The breakdown: £750 - Etihad indirect flights (1.5 hour stop off in Abu Dhabi)  £690 - Bed & Breakfast, dinner, all transport (bus, train, taxi), cultural entrance fees, hospital treatment, laundry and grocery shopping.  The People : Incredibly warm and hospitable, very friendly and eager to help. They really enjoyed stopping for a friendly chat on the street, and we felt genuinely welcomed as English tourists. Scenery : The views were breathtaking, particularly the hill country from a train.  Weather : Consistently hot and sunny. To avoid the intense heat, we found it best to travel very early morning.  Lovely Beaches : Beautiful and clean, though the steep drop off and powerful waves made sw...

Time to go home

I sign off my travel blog with a brief post. Today we are heading home. George snored all night so I had no sleep - just ready for a long flight 😬 Cases are packed and both around 12kg each so well under the limit! 👜 It's been an amazing 4 month trip in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia by sea, water, coach and train. 🚂✈️🚌🚢 It's very difficult to say what was my favourite part of the trip but Luang Prabang, Koh Lanta and Langkawi were highlights.  I'm not looking forward to the UK weather and I also need to find a job. But I'm looking forward to seeing friends and family.  Until the next time 👋 Tracy x

Onwards to KL

We left the lovely island of Langkawi this morning. Our next stop is Kuala Lumpur. I highly recommend this beach resort and hopefully I will return again one day 🏖️ #kualalumpur #malaysia #airasia
